LIBERIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The best way to get to Cubos del Mar is to land at Liberia International airport. There are regular flights from the USA landing at Liberia airport: Delta Airlines from Atlanta, American Airlines from Miami, Continental from Houston and several others, all with good connections to other cities. Liberia airport is only at 1h30 drive from Cubos del Mar. You can either rent a car at the airport (we recommend SOLID CAR RENTAL, and we can prepare the booking with them directly for you).
We can also arrange a taxi to pick you up and bring you to the hotel. The current rate is around $100 one way.
SAN JOSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The other option is to arrive at San Jose International Airport; the drive from there to our hotel takes about 4.5 hours. Instead of driving, you can fly with a local airline to Tamarindo airport. From there you can rent a car or we can arrange transportation by taxi to the hotel.
DRIVING YOUR OWN CAR
From Liberia and San Jose, there are 2 main different ways to arrive to Playa Negra: via Santa Cruz or via Tamarindo.
I will always recommend the way via Santa Cruz.
From San Jose airport, follow directions towards San Ramon, Puntarenas and Liberia. After about 120 km (73 miles) on the way to Liberia, turn left at the Shell gas station, following the signs "Puente de la amistad de Taiwan". After crossing the bridge, follow signs to Santa Cruz, where you should stop at a gas station to fill up, since there won't be any other gas station on the coast.
From Liberia, drive towards Santa Cruz.
Be carefull that Waze will recommand the road via Tamarindo but the road is worst and longer !
Please look instead for the followings "cities"/villages : SANTA CRUZ - 27 de Abril - PARAISO
Follow the road 21 all the way till Santa Cruz.
From Liberia, it is somehow 1 hour and 50 km.
From San Jose, it is somehow 3,5 hour and 230 km.
Then from Santa Cruz to Playa Negra, it is 35 min.
Before entering in Santa Cruz if coming from Liberia or when exiting of Sta Cruz if coming from San jose, you will see a bridge on Rio Diria and a road on the right.
Turn right direction “Playa Tamarindo/27 de Abril/ Paraiso": road number 150.
Keep all the way straight until arrival at X after another bridge and follow the sign for “27 de Abril / Paraiso".
It is 24 km.
Turn left. Do NOT go straight to Tamarindo direction.
Keep straight for 800 meters and before enter in the city of “27 of Abril", turn right.
Keep straight until arriving in the city of “Paraiso". Road 928.
It is another 13 Km.
You will see a football field on your right when entering in town.
Turn right at X and keep straight and pass the bridge and enter the dust road.
No more asphalt from this point now.
Go straight until arriving to “Playa Negra/Los pargos" village or seeing "LOS NANCITES" sign on the road.
It should be around 15 min for the 3 last kilometros.
